Washington D.C. has been participating in the Fasting 5K since its inception in 2013. The local charity this team is fundraising for is the Pro Bono Counseling Project, an organization that provides access to free mental health therapy for families, couples and individuals who want, but cannot afford it.

The charity focuses on clients who have been victims of violence, are diagnosed with a long-term or terminal illness, caring for loved ones with long-term or terminal illnesses, service members and their loved ones and single parents and their families. They also solicit licensed therapists in the community to donate their time so that there are no barriers to care. Anyone who wants therapy is welcomed.

Funds raised by in the Fasting 5K team in Washington D.C. will pay for the transportation costs of those receiving support to visit doctors and hospitals for treatment. Often people are unable to attend therapy sessions because they do not have a way to get there – these funds will help pay for transportation to their provider.

In addition, funds will be used to update Pro Bono Counseling Project’s online presence, so they can expand their outreach by spreading awareness of their services. Expanding their online presence reduces stigma associated with illnesses and invites those who may be reluctant to ask for help.
