We are so pleased to have you as part of our Fasting 5K team! We want to help you raise the maximum amount of money for our deserving charities, so here’s how we’re going to do it!
Fundraising Minimum is $250 Per Runner
The first thing you need to do is set a fundraising goal for yourself. We set a minimum goal of $250 per participant, but we know you can AIM HIGHER! Have confidence in your fundraising ability and have fun with it. Come up with innovative ways to draw attention and get donors for your cause!
Include the Link to Your Personal Donation Page
After registering, you will have your own personal donation page that will include your profile, a list of donations by donor and a tally of all donations. This is the page a donor will see when they click on your donation link. A donor can click on the donate button and enter payment information – the donation will go towards your tally and appear as a donation on your page.
Face to Face Fundraising
Asking for donations face to face is generally the most successful way to ask for support – so don’t be shy … there’s nothing to lose!
When attending iftaars and social outings, spread the word to the people around you and recruit people as donors or participants in the race. Or, consider printing small leaflets with a brief description of the event and your donation link to encourage people to donate to at a later time.
Sending emails to donors is a key strategy in helping you achieve your goal. Personalizing the message is the best way to make this strategy effective.
- Email your coworkers – do this just once and then send a reminder out a few days before the race
- Email your friends and family – do this as many times as you want (you know them better than we do!)
Here is an example donor email that you can modify and personalize:
I am participating in a 5K on June 25, through an organization called Fasting 5K (on the web at www.fasting5k.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/fasting5k) that is focused on raising funds for mental health services and awareness for youth and families locally and abroad this year. We are working this year with [Insert local charity name] to help raise funds for their mental health program in [city name] area. This event is taking place during the month of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims around the world where there is heightened focus placed on reflection, prayer, thankfulness and giving.
To that point of giving, Fasting 5K’s goal for each runner is $250, but my hope is that you’ll be able to help me reach my personal goal of _____ to help raise funds for our mission this year.
Whatever you might be able to donate would be a great help. During the past three years since its inception, Fasting 5K has raised over $80,000 for children’s education – supporting local charities across the United States and abroad.
Again, any amount helps. You can donate to my page at [Insert your personal donation link here].
If you are interested in details about the run itself or if you have any other questions, let me know. I really appreciate the support!
Utilize social media in your fundraising efforts by sharing your personal donation link on all of your channels. Make sure your circle of friends knows how excited and passionate you are about this cause. Make them feel like they are missing out if they don’t participate – either by donating or joining as a participant. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are quick and easy platforms that you can use to ask for donations or to ask others to join you at the event!
- Facebook – post links to the Fasting 5K Facebook page along with relevant messaging; thank your donors (be sure to firs ask them if it’s ok to tag them or thank them by name); use pictures (change your profile picture and/or cover photo with relevant images); and constantly use #fasting5k
- Twitter – tweet @fasting5k and use #fasting5k regularly; retweet @fasting5k tweets; and don’t forget to follow @FASTING5K
- Instagram and any other social media forums – use them to spread awareness and generate excitement!
Remember, we are raising funds for the local charity in your city and the international charity. The money you raise impacts your city’s ability to serve its community, so there is an immediate impact to your area! Also, each city is competing with each other in having the bragging rights for top city. Organizers will send regular updates so you can keep track of how you and your city rank!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your city lead or complete a contact form on our website.
We hope that you have found these tips to be useful. Don’t forget to ask for donations, follow up and thank your donors – you are sure to be successful! Remember raising funds should be FUN! Have fun with it and feel free to be silly with it!
Thank you for all you’re doing for Fasting5k, and we will see you at the event on June 25.
